The New Yorker is possibly the most profitable magazine in the world. Their fiction has been a staple of the American literary scene for many decades. They accept unsolicited submissions of short stories. Publication by them is nearly impossible – but it does happen, and it can launch your career. Keep track of which articles you have submitted to which publications. Because can submit the same short story to multiple publications, you will need to withdraw that article if it gets published.

Dot matrix printouts are acceptable only if they are easily readable. When using a word processor, please do not justify the right margin. If sending a printout, separate the sheets first. The manuscript should include the title, your name and address, and the number of words in your story.

Rates and word count based upon the final, edited piece. Please see our editorial calendar for upcoming topics. Query only if you feel you are the best person to write on each topic, and be sure to explain why. If the submission is a response to immediate events on the literary scene, please email it to for immediate consideration. However, we do require that you credit Brittle Paper as the original publisher of the work.

We would love you to have previous writing experience, especially in the niche you select. But experience isn’t required for you to do well. You’re right for this role whether you’re looking for a long-term professional relationship or a backlink to your site. We expect you to have a grasp of English grammar and enjoy writing about what you love. No, absolutely no fee for becoming an author. Our unique and transparent PCA tool will not miss even a single page click on your story.

To bridge the gap between emerging and established authors, SLICE offers a space where both are published side-by-side. In each issue, a specific cultural theme becomes the catalyst for articles, interviews, stories and poetry from renowned writers and lesser-known voices alike. Short fiction and nonfiction submissions should be 5,000 words max. It’s important to understand a few things about fiction submissions before you send your stories out for publication. For starters, no story is guaranteed publication. Fiction reviewers look over hundreds of submissions for each publication, including reviewers at flash fiction journals.

Keep in mind that the art of how to write a short story can close with something that ends very abruptly or you can flesh it out until there’s a satisfying ending. Of time on your main character, but know their history, age, personality, family life, friend life, love life, and other details that shape the way someone sees the world. You can pull ideas from short stories from everywhere. But that’s just not the case (there’s an art to writing an amazing short story)—and I’ll tell you why in just a minute.

Please note that we receive a very large number of submissions and failure to adhere to these submission guidelines will severely decrease the chances of your submission being viewed. Except when solicited, we do not accept submissions that have been published elsewhere. We help you save time, money, and headaches through the book, writing, marketing, and publishing process by giving you the proven, step-by-step process and accountability to publish successfully. All while allowing you to maintain control of your book–and its royalties. Short story writers have a challenge that requires some patience to overcome, but it’s worth it.
